October saw gyms, cafeterias, and front lawns of six area elementary schools transformed into busy farmer’s markets. Students at Northport Public School, Glen Lake Public Schools, Buckley Community School, Mill Creek Elementary School, Suttons Bay Elementary, and Leland Public School had a chance to meet their local farmers, taste test apple varieties, ride the MSU-Extension smoothie bike, meet a live chicken, and of course purchase produce to bring home.
While Leland Public School has been hosting pop-up farmers markets for years, the experience was a new one for students and staff at the other five schools. The TBAISD Farm to School team partnered with Taste the Local Difference and Leelanau County MSU-Extension to bring the markets into the schools–and we’re so glad we did! Students, teachers, staff, and community members alike shared with us how much they enjoyed the experience. We’re hoping to help even more schools host markets next season!
